The 2023 Ultimate
Klondike Derby
Feb 24 - 25, 2023

The Ultimate Klondike Derby.  Camp Friday night, Saturday night, both nights, or join for the day on Saturday only.  Open to all Patrols (Scouts and Crews) who want to have fun! Patrols will work to prove their skills at the Ultimate Klondike Derby to win the prestigious Traveling Klondike Derby Trophy, and have the Unit immortalized forever.

Event: $15 Early Bird before 2/23, after $25

·    While the event officially ends on Saturday, February 25 at 5pm, Units are free to spend the night and leave on Sunday Morning

Saturday, February 25, 2023:

8:00 - 9:00      Registration continues in Dining Hall

8:30 - 9:00      SPL meeting Dining Hall.  Staff & Station Leaders meeting, Dining Hall. Sled Check-in

9:00 – 9:15     Opening ceremony Parade Field.

9:15 - 11:30    Events open

11:30-12:30    Lunch in campsites or on the trail

12:30 - 2:45    Events re-open

3:00  - 4:00     Sled Race.

• While the event officially ends on Saturday, February 25 at 5pm, Troops are free to spend the night and leave on Sunday Morning. 

• This event is open to all Webelos Scouts to attend.
  •  They must be accompanied by as Scouts BSA Troop.  
  • They must have parental guidance along the trail. 
  • Webelos may not spend the night.  Inside or out.  
  • Winter attire will be a leadership priority

 Events for Ultimate Klondike Derby

Traveling Trophy - Last year you filled out our post Klondike Survey and we listened, you wanted more events, so we have kept the events you said you loved and added even more fun.

Events

Scouts will have the opportunity to test their skills at stations located across camp.  Patrols will earn points at each station based on their skill, problem solving, teamwork, and Scout spirit.  The patrol that finishes with the most points will earn the prestigious Klondike Derby Traveling Trophy.  A maximum of 10 pts can be earned at any given station.

• Check-in (Sled Check) - Each Patrol sled will be checked to ensure you have the all the necessary gear to complete the Ultimate Klondike Derby.  See the Ultimate Klondike Derby Sled gear check-list below.
• Knot Relay – How well do you know your tenderfoot and 2^nd class knots?  8 Scouts will be randomly selected to compete (if less than 8 in your patrol, some Scouts will go twice) and will draw from a list of the 5 knots, each Scout will go after the previous Scout has successfully completed their Knot.  Team’s will be scored on total Patrol time.
• Ravine crossing – How fast can you get your Klondike Sled and Patrol across the ravine on a rope?
• Ice rescue – Do you know what to do when someone falls through the ice, how to treat them once they get out, and how to transport them with or without/ a stretcher?
• Fire Building – Patrols will compete in the 2^nd class fire building requirement.  Burn a rope that is 6 inches off the ground and have the flame burn for an additional 2 minutes.  Patrols can bring their own fire building materials.   All materials must be all natural and wood products (e.g., can’t use non-processed wood like paper and no accelerants, like hand sanitizer), and must be created using the tools in Tenderfoot 3d (e.g., can’t use something like sawdust) to prepare your fire building supplies.  Bonus points if you can start your fire without a match.
• Big foot Race – Use our Big Foot skis, or bring your own to complete our Big Foot challenge course.  Big Foot skis are 2 2x4s with rope handles, 4 Scouts line up on them, and must walk together as a patrol.
• Basketball shootout – 8 randomly selected members of your patrol (if less than 8 in your patrol, some Scouts will go twice), will shoot from pre-designated areas on the court.  Each person gets one shot, and the harder the shot, the more points you could earn for your team.
• Foot Ball Throw – 8 randomly selected member of your patrol (if less than 8 in your patrol, some Scouts will go twice), will shoot through a hoop at different distances, and the harder the shot, the more point you could earn for your team.
• Log Pull and crosscut – You must tie a timber hitch to your log and drag it to the cutting station.  Once there, you must cut off an end of the log.
• Tree Identification.  10 trees will be clearly marked and visible for tree identification
• Axe throwing / archery or Shooting
• Obstacle course relay – How quickly
• Scavenger hunt – Who says that phones can’t be used as a tool? Throughout your Klondike Journey, you will be asked find 10 items.  Capture a picture with your phone, and show all 10 (or as many as you can find) to the judges.

Ultimate Klondike Derby Bonus Points  

• 10pts if the patrol sleeps outside in a tent.  
• 10pts for at least one adult volunteer manning a station 
• 10pts for having at least one Webelos Scout on your team.
• 10pts for adult leaders not following their Patrols
• 10 pts for turning in feedback survey

Ultimate Klondike Derby Sled Race

• In addition to completing for the Ultimate Klondike Derby Traveling Trophy, your Patrol can also compete to become the Ultimate Klondike Derby Sled Race Champions.  Awards will be given for 1^st – 3^rd place.

Planning For the Ultimate Klondike Derby

During the Troop meetings prior to the Ultimate Klondike Derby, we recommend you review the following items.

 Go over winter clothing

• Wool and Synthetic vs. Cotton and Polyester
• Layering, wicking of moisture, keeping dry
• Discuss the importance of keeping feet dry
• Bring a second pair of socks and shoes
• Have a good pair of gloves and a warm hat

Ultimate Klondike Derby Sled Gear check-list – Having the “right stuff”

Your first station is a check in.  Make sure you are equipped to earn maximum points

• Patrol flag attached to sled
• Boy Scout Handbook
• One compass and map
• Blanket
• First Aid Kit
• Pocketknife
• Roll of twine, rope or clothesline ( will need for knots and ravine crossing)
• Fire starting supplies (including matches)
• One Canteen / Water Bottle, filled with water – per Scout
• Cup or Mug for each Scout
• Trash Bag
• Patrol roster (waterproof)
• Tarp
• Every Member of the Patrol is ready for a day outdoors (including: boots, gloves, hat, winter jacket, and snow pants or layered pants)

Big Foot Ski requirements (They will be provided at the event, but if your patrol wants to make their own, they may bring them.)

• Teams of 4 Scouts line up on two 8-foot 2x4s and race. 
• Units MAY NOT mount boots or shoes to the boards. 
• Racers must be evenly spaced.
• Each team must have 4 racers.
• The bottom of the 2 x 4’s must be natural wood – no paint, cleats, traction, wax, grooves, etc.
• Skis will be inspected before the race begins.
• Here is a list of supplies you will need to build your own
  • 2 - 8-foot 2x4 boards
  • 100 feet of 3/8” polypropylene rope
  • Electrical tape
• Instructions
  • From one end of each board, make a mark every 18”
  • Mark the center of the board at each 18” increment
  • Drill 1” holes about 1/2” deep, then drill the rest of the hold with 3/8” bit
  • Cut rope into 4-ft lengths using electrical tape to keep rope from fraying
  • Feed rope through the holes and tie a knot on the bottom side that will recess into the 1” hole

Klondike Derby Sleds

• There is no “required” sled design
• You are welcome to use whatever design you choose for your sled.

Campsites and Cabins

• Cabins will be booked on a first come first served basis. 
• Campsites will be assigned at check in. 
• Firewood can be purchased at www.wnyscouting.org   

Rules and other information

•  The Scout Oath and Law, and the Outdoor Code are ALWAYS our Guidelines.
• No One is allowed in or on Lake. Violators will be sent home, - no questions asked!! (Sorry it seems harsh, but we cannot risk anyone violating these rules.)
• Two Deep Leadership, as outlined in the National Scouting Policy is required.
• Ground Fires must be contained in authorized pits or fire barrels.
• Wildlife must be left alone.  
• Snowboarding and Skiing are great events, but please do not bring this equipment.  Snowshoes are encouraged, however! 
• Units are encouraged to camp in tents at campsites.  Those doing so will receive extra points. However, cabins and lean-tos are available on a first come, first serve basis.  Arrangements must be made by pre-registration only at the Scout service center. 
• Each troop must bring a 1^st Aid Kit. And part A&B medical forms for each Scout and leader. 
• Absolutely no one is allowed on or in the lake at any time.  (yes, we mentioned it twice)  
• Registration fees cover administration, insurance, camp and dining hall usage.
• Everyone who registered will also receive the limited-edition Ultimate Klondike Patch.
• We are asking leaders from each Unit to volunteer to help with staffing.  You can sign-up during registration or be assigned a location at Cracker Barrel on Friday night.
• The Purpose of the is to have a FUN and SAFE cold weather outing.  Any Scout who the leadership feels is ill-prepared for the weather will NOT be allowed to participate.
• Scouts must have warm weather boots and warm winter gear.  We are promoting tent camping.  Scouts choosing to sleep in their own individual tents, will need to be briefed prior to arrival by their Scoutmaster on cold weather safety.)
