 Message from the Scout Executive

Today is one of those glorious Western New York spring days with more than just a hint of summer weather.  We are about to enter the last month of the school year many packs and troops are preparing to go into “summer mode”.  It is important to ask what your pack, troop or crew is going to do.  I have talked a lot about the importance of getting your Scouts camping this summer.  While that is the most important thing for each individual Scout, there are a few things that each pack, troop and crew need to make sure happen over the course of the summer.

First and foremost make certain that you are doing something each month as a pack, troop or crew.  For Cub Scout Packs you can earn the Summer Time Pack Award by doing just that.  The activities don’t have to be anything too elaborate, just fun.  Day Camp or Summer Camp will count for the activity for that month.  The other months could be a cook out at a local park or an ice cream social, anything that gets families together as a pack.  For Boy Scout Troops and Venture Crews, your monthly camp out can serve the same purpose, or you might consider having a fun day time activity for the whole family of the Scout.  It can be a great way to get the families of your Scouts more connected to the Troop or Crew.

The second thing that you need to do is to attend the Program Launch in your district.  Each district is hosting a meeting on June 12 that will give your unit committee or Patrol Leader’s Council all the information about every aspect of programs throughout each district and the council.  Activities, Advancement, Camping and Training will be represented.  You will also be able to pick up your copy of the 2013-2014 council calendar for your unit.

The third thing is to use the information from the program launch to plan you program for the 2013-2014 Scouting year.  Feed back that we have received from your Voice of the Scout surveys has strongly shown that parents want to know what is planned for their son’s pack or troop.  Cub Scout Packs should involve the Pack Committee and the Den Leaders.  This is the best time to finalize your den leadership for next year.  Boy Scout Troops should use their Patrol Leaders Council with guidance from the Scoutmaster to plan their program.  A well planned year is one of the best tools to attract new Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in the fall, and Webelos into the troop next spring.

The last thing that you need to be sure and do is to have a safe and fun summer enjoying all that Scouting has to offer.

NEWS FROM THE AQUATICS COMMITTEE

NEW  NEW  NEW

GNFC Paddlecraft Safety Policy

Effective January 1, 2014:

Paddlecraft Safety will become mandatory in the council beginning January 2014 and applies to all independently run unit canoe and kayak trips.  At least one adult in the unit who will be participating in the trip must be certified in Paddlecraft Safety.  The Safety Afloat course, by itself, will no longer be sufficient. Exceptions: Birchbark and any National BSA Canoe Base where a guide certified in Paddlecraft Safety is with the unit for the duration of the trip.  (Note: The course will be offered during each session at SSR summer camp and twice outside of summer camp.)

This year, in addition to SSR summer camp, the course will be offered on June 22nd and August 24th at Camp Scouthaven. See the council website for more information regarding registration for either of these dates. The certification is currently good for 3 years.  We want to encourage units to begin taking the course now.

Beginning in 2014, proof of Paddlecraft Safety certification will be required when a unit applies for a tour permit involving canoeing or kayaking.
