 Message from the Scout Executive

February is a special month for Scouting.  It is the traditional month that our packs celebrate their Blue and Gold Banquets.  Every young Cub Scout learns that we are celebrating the birthday of the Boy Scouts of America.

February 8th is the anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America.  For me that date is a potent reminder of just how powerful a good turn can be: In 1909, Chicago publisher William D. Boyce lost his way in a dense London fog.  A boy came to his aid and, after guiding the man, refused a tip, explaining that as a Scout he would not take a tip for doing a Good Turn.  This gesture by an unknown Scout inspired a meeting with Robert Baden-Powell, the British founder of the Boy Scouts. As a result, William Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910.  Every day as Scouts by doing good turns we live up to the promise that Scouting holds for us and for the communities of Western New York.

Looking ahead to warmer weather now is the time to finalize your plans for summer.  Camp Schoellkopf has planned a very special summer to celebrate its seventy-fifth anniversary.  Every Boy Scout should plan to make it part of their summer.  In addition to our outstanding Boy Scout Summer Camp, we are offering our Eagle Week and Scouting’s premier training for youth leaders: National Youth Leadership Training (Our own White Buffalo).  Every troop that sends youth to White Buffalo has found it to greatly strengthen their troop program.  This summer will also bring the very first Jamboree at the Bechtel Summit in West Virginia.

For our Cub Scouts we have two very special opportunities for summer camp.  Camp Scouthaven hosts our Cub Scout Summer Camp, offering four days and three nights at the premier camp for Cub Scouts.  We also are offering day camp over four weeks at four different locations.  Day Camp is five days or evenings packed with fun for every Cub Scout.  You can be the first to take advantage of this exciting program.  Now is the time for your Pack or Den to plan to attend one or both of these great Cub Scout camping opportunities.  Both count toward earning the Summertime Pack Award which is Scouting’s Award for those Packs that offer an awesome program throughout the summer months.
