BSA Featured in Article Series on Youth in USAToday

We are excited to share news about a national media campaign that we believe could translate into local results for your council, district and unit.  Last month, BSA worked with USA Today major series underway called “Saving Childhood.” The series looks at some of the underlying themes of how childhood is changing. The series began on Monday, and the articles can be found at

One of the articles, which is slated to run April 14th, 2011 (tomorrow!), will look at how children today spend less time outdoors, and are less active. The BSA provided spokespersons (Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca and Scouts from the Baltimore Area Council) to talk about how BSA is working to be an advocate for youth and to counter these alarming trends by getting kids outdoors and active.  We believe the article will demonstrate that the BSA is an organization with real solutions to offer in the face of the widespread and troubling trend of childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles (as is highlighted in the national strategic plan).

Publicize Your Unit's Community Service Projects!

Our first "Good Turn" new articles are now posted on the RJD Good Turn Page > - your unit's projects can too!  How?  If you see or hear of a good community service project, Eagle Scout Leadership project or other worthy story worth sharing, write it up and send it to us.  We'll post it on the Red Jacket web site and help promote it to the local newspapers and other media outlets.

Here's what you need to do:

  • Take a few pictures of the project, showing the work in progress, ideally with people doing the work (painting, planting, digging...)
  • Jot down the names of the people in the picture
  • Write up a couple paragraphs about the project, covering the basics (who, what, when, where, why...)
  • Send it via email to >

We'll take it from there!
