Leave No Trace Master Educator Course
in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada


Become a LNT Master Educator while enjoying the unspoiled wilderness of Algonquin Provincial Park.

This training event is being run by the Greater Niagara Frontier Council, Birchbark Expeditions high adventure program  It is open to all registered scouters (18+) from the Boy Scouts of America and Scouts Canada.  Sanctioned by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and the Boy Scouts of America for Scouters from both the BSA and Scouts Canada.

The program includes all instructional material and a one-year Leave No Trace membership. Also includes use of tents, crew gear, canoes and safety equipment.  Hammocks are welcome, but not provided. Participants are responsible for their own personal gear.

Agenda:

  • Monday, August 10, by 3PM.  Arrive at Whitefish Group campground (KM 36.9 on Route 60 in Algonquin)  
  • Tuesday, 8/11: Full day of classes in base camp with an hour of on water training. Pack and prepare to go on water Wednesday AM.
  • Wednesday 8/12:  Break base camp and depart from Rock Lake Access. Paddle 2 miles to first night’s campsite.  More classes and individual presentations in afternoon.
  • Thursday 8/13:  Break camp and paddle 3.5 miles with a 300 meter portage. Discuss impact of portage on land and visit Pen Lake Falls. More classes and presentations.
  • Friday 8/14:  Break camp in morning reverse trek and paddle 3.5 miles with a 300 meter portage.  Stop at a few campsites to identify user impacts, Set up at south end of Rock Lake.  Finish individual presentations.     
  • Saturday 8/15:   Break camp and return to Rock Lake Access, rack canoes, and showers.  Program to finish around 2PM.  (Feel free to stay over on Saturday and visit the world-class museums and attractions on the Route 60 corridor. 

Cost: $290 (US). $100 due with registration, balance due by July 10, 2020

Participants must:

  1. Complete a BSA Swimmer Test prior to attending
  2. Review the Birchbark Expeditions Risk Advisory with their health care provider
  3. Be within the BSA High Adventure height/weight guidelines
  4. Submit a completed Informed Consent form, signed by their health care provider
  5. US citizens will need a current Passport, Passport Card or Enhanced Drivers License for entry into Canada.
