Darwin Martin House

Earn your Landscape Architecture Merit Badge while enjoying the Darwin Martin House.  This is a full uniform event.  Adult supervision is required but adults are encouraged to register here for a private tour of the Darwin Martin House Complex for a $10.00 fee.

Before your visit to the Martin House Complex

To satisfy the requirements for the Landscape Architecture Merit Badge, all scouts must complete the pre-visit activities, and bring all materials with them to the Martin House on the day of the program.

  1. Look at and study a public place that has an area that could be landscaped.  This could be a school, a company or a place of workshop.  Show you can do the following:
  1. Use graph paper.  Using a measuring tape, measure and draw the entry of the site and its nearby area using a scale of 1/8 inch equals 1 foot on an 11-by-17 inch piece of paper.  Be sure to include the driveway and the wall and door where people enter the school or place.  Indicate the sidewalks, structures, trees and plants within the study area.  Bring the copy with you to the Martin House, as we will learn how to design a landscape.
  1. Study the Visitor Center landscape proposal (included).  Try to understand the layout of the proposed plants and shrubs.  We will be looking at it in person when you arrive to the site.  Ask yourself the following questions:
    1. What kinds of things do we have to think about when designing the landscape for a Visitor’s Center?
    2. What challenges might arise when thinking about designing the landscape for a public versus a private site? (a museum vs. your own home)
  2. Familiarize yourself with the plant list below.  These are plants that you will see on site at the Martin House Complex.  You will be asked to identify the following during our scavenger hunt.

  1. Copper Beech Tree
  2. Foxglove
